A View From The Bridge

“Italy is a nice country”- Inter Milan target leaves door open for Chelsea exit

Trevoh Chalobah is open to a Chelsea exit amidst links with Inter Milan

Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah has not closed the door for an exit from the club amidst interest from Serie A side Inter Milan.

The report reveals that Chalobah is deciding whether Milan is a good place to live for him or not and he is currently holidaying in the country after the end of a tough 2022-23 season. Meanwhile, Inter are negotiating a deal with Chelsea for a possible move.

The 23-year-old signed a new deal with the Blues back in November that will keep him at the club till the summer of 2028. But, with him getting sporadic game time, one would understand why he isn’t too convinced about staying at Stamford Bridge.

Here’s what the Englishman said when asked about his future (h/t Football.London, via Sky Sports):

“Obviously you don’t know what the future holds. I played in France as well when I went on loan there, played in England and you never know. When you play in a new destination it is something for a player to experience. You don’t know what the future holds.

“Italy is a nice country and the Italian league is very good as well. You don’t know what the future holds. I’m still a Chelsea player and focused on Chelsea but you never know what the future holds. I like it here in Italy, the weather is good, the people are nice, the food is good and I’m enjoying my time here.”

Chalobah is a versatile defender who can play as a centre-back and a right-back. He is good on the ball, can be aerially great and the flexibility is a help to any manager.

His future at Chelsea might depend on whether new manager Mauricio Pochettino wants to use him from next season onwards.

Logic says that it would make sense to keep the Englishman and hope that he develops further as a player and becomes a key member of the squad as we go along.

However, if the club and the manager have other plans by selling the player and using the money to make signings, the pressure might be on them to deliver in the market and not buy players for the sake of it (talking about the last two windows).

The other factor while looking at the balance of the squad would be the absence of European football for the next season. What it means is that Pochettino does not need to have a deeper squad to navigate the 2023/24 campaign. He can stick with 20-22 players and hope they are good enough to carry the team higher up the table.
