Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has said that Real Madrid have ended negotiations with Chelsea over the prospect of signing Kai Havertz.
Apparently, they will only re-open talks with the Blues if they lower his price tag. It currently stands at €60million excluding add-ons, which is undoubtedly a steep price tag from Los Blancos‘ point of view.
Havertz has had a very tough time at Chelsea adjusting to the no. 9 role under Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter. A return of nine goals and one assist from 47 games across competitions this season is very underwhelming.
The 24-year-old isn’t a young player anymore and much is expected from him. He was sublime for Bayer Leverkusen but in the Premier League, it just seems like Havertz is yet to fully impose himself on his new surroundings.
There is still quality in him. That is why Real Madrid have been interested in him – a club in need of a new No. 9 after Karim Benzema’s move to Al-Ittihad earlier this month.
Eyeing Havertz is strange from Real Madrid if they want him to replace the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner. He isn’t a goal-machine and neither has he been able to make himself our first-choice centre-forward.
Chelsea, however, are right to demand what they are demanding because, from the Blues’ perspective, the Germany international is a versatile, experienced attacker who still has a lot of years ahead of him.
Havertz also has two years left on his Chelsea deal (Transfermarkt). The club must consult Mauricio Pochettino and take his input on the matter.
If the former Tottenham Hotspur manager wants Havertz in SW6, then we should not sell him. If he doesn’t, it is best to try and make as much as we can of the £75.8million we paid to Bayer Leverkusen for his services in the summer of 2020.
