A View From The Bridge

“You’ll see the real me”- Chelsea star makes promise to fans ahead of new season

Chelsea winger Noni Madueke promises fans to show them the real him on the field next season

Chelsea winger Noni Madueke promises the club fans to show the “real me” next season and contribute to the team’s success in the meantime.

Madueke was signed by the Blues in the January window from Dutch club PSV Eindhoven. He made 12 league appearances in the second half of last season, scoring a goal and playing a total of 646 minutes (Transfermarkt).

Although not played much, the England U-21 international showed his quality on the ball and the runs he can make in the final third. In the away game against Arsenal where Chelsea lost 3-1, he was probably the best player on the field for the Blues.

Here’s what Madueke said about his time at Stamford Bridge and what to expect from him next season (h/t Evening Standard):

“A lot of changes are out of the players’ hands, but you roll with the punches. I guess when the club wants to do something a bit special, there’s bound to be changes. We’re trying to create a squad that can compete for the next 10 years.

“I definitely performed well, showed my ability, but next season you’ll see the real me. Next season, I want to contribute massively to Chelsea winning. That’s it. We’re all buzzing to come back in pre-season with the new manager, forget last year and bring Chelsea back to where they’re meant to be; fighting for titles.”

Madueke is a left-footed winger who prefers to play on the right. After the departure of Hakim Ziyech, Chelsea do not a player of that combination in the squad.

So, we might see more from the 21-year-old next season under Mauricio Pochettino. He has the pace, creative skills and goal-scoring prowess to become a handy player for the Blues.

Although the message conveyed by the England U-21 international is for himself, that can be shared with most players in the squad who will be donning the Chelsea shirt next season.

After finishing in the bottom half of the 2022/23 league table, the team cannot go lower than this (until they are in too good to go down territory). Let’s hope the energy exhibited by Madueke through these comments can be reflected on the field not just by him, but also by the rest of the players. Getting close to the top four might be the first target for next season.
