Manchester United have opened talks with Chelsea to sign Mason Mount, with the midfielder leaning towards a move to United this summer.
Although no official offer has been made, the Times reports that (h,t Mirror) United have begun negotiations to sign the 24-year-old.
The England international seems now ready to depart Chelsea, and it is believed that prior personal arrangements have been reached. While that would come as a blow for the Blues, it makes sense financially, given his deal expires at the end of next season.
The Old Trafford outfit is growing more optimistic that they can sign the Chelsea midfielder once the summer window opens. However, it has also been claimed that United are contemplating a £55 million offer, which is less than what Chelsea is willing to ask for Mount, as the Blues have requested £70 million for the midfielder.
Chelsea, though, believed that the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino would be a factor in Mount’s choice, but that has not been the case.
Additionally, the club appears to have done everything in its power to keep the midfielder, despite Mount allegedly refusing to speak with the board and instead turning the matter over to his agents. Mount’s entourage has refuted this assertion and stated that money was not the motivation.
One thing seems certain: Mount wants to depart, and the club can do nothing to stop it. Therefore, it would be best to put this behind us and concentrate on the upcoming campaign, and if Manchester United were to agree to the asking price, we could then use the profit to sign another midfielder.
The Cobham graduate’s service to Chelsea across the years will always be fondly remembered by fans. Of course, they would have preferred that he remained here, considering he is one of our own. But it seems wise to sell the player and make a profit before it’s too late.
