Liverpool end their pursuit of in-demand Chelsea star

Liverpool have withdrawn from the race to sign Chelsea star Mason Mount

Liverpool have walked away from the race to land Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount, with Manchester United closing in on his signature.

According to the Metro, the Anfield outfit have lessened their interest in signing the England international. This is because of the Blues’ £70 million valuation of Mount, who has just one year remaining on his contract.

The Reds recently signed 2022 World Cup winner Alexis MacAllister, who joined from Brighton & Hove Albion. Liverpool were keen to add Mount to their roster as a summer of rebuild awaits.

Now Manchester United remains the team in the lead but appear unwilling to pay Chelsea’s asking price. The Red Devils appear set to test West Londoner’s patience and submit a bid in the region of £50 million. Whether that will be enough remains to be seen.

The current Carabao Cup winner’s head coach Erik Ten Hag is an admirer of Mount’s athleticism and sees him as an upgrade on Christian Eriksen. While that may be true, we are under no obligation to sell on the cheap.

Chelsea’s hopes of extending the England international’s contract, however, have been shattered given that he has shown no signs that he is on the same page. With Mount leaning towards a move to the red side of Manchester, the onus is on us to hold firm in negotiations.

Liverpool have already signed Mac Allister, who is also an attacking midfielder. So, buying two attacking midfielders won’t be prudent for the Reds, but who wouldn’t want a player like Mount?

Hopefully, United will also do the same and withdraw themselves from the race. We know the worth of Mason Mount, who is yet to reach his peak, and if he does remain at the club, then we have one of the top midfielders for us in the coming years.

More Chelsea News:

He will also suit Mauricio Pochettino’s style of play given his intense pressing and ability to score goals. Let’s just hope that the Argentine manager does something to convince Mount to stay for another few years. Should that not prove to be the case, we can hopefully sell him for top dollar.
