Fabrizio Romano confirms Barcelona have registered Gavi despite Chelsea interest

Fabrizio Romano has revealed on Twitter that Barcelona have registered Chelsea target Gavi amid claims that the youngster could fail to enrol with the Catalan club’s senior team.

Due to continuous financial issues, Barcelona had earlier in the month failed to register Gavi, causing the youngster’s future at the club doubtful.

This saw Chelsea spring into action as they sent out agents to attend discussions with Gavi’s representatives while keeping an eye on the 18-year-old’s predicament. The Blues were also willing to break the bank to make the Spanish international the highest-paid player on the team.

And for a brief while, it seemed as though the West Londoners were getting close to signing Gavi after a successful meeting with 18-year-old representatives.

However, the Blues’ interest also cooled down when the youngster himself confided that he was committed to Barcelona.

Now the imminent departures of Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique, and Jordi Alba have put some relief to Barcelona’s salary cap, which has helped them register Gavi as a first-team player.

And now the Stamford Bridge outfit is looking to add a defensive midfielder. New manager Mauricio Pochettino urged the West Londoners to sign a quality midfielder as N’Golo Kante is now closing in on joining Saudi Club Al-Ittihad.

Gavi’s signing would have been incredible, and his presence in Chelsea’s midfield would have added aggression and persistent pressing. He may be 18 – younger than many academy players in our ranks – but he is already a world-class first-team starter.

But it always seemed that he wanted to stay in Barcelona, and that is what seems to have happened. Of course, he may have been helpless and forced to take action on his future if Barcelona failed to register him. But that is something neither he nor Barca have to worry about for now.

So, maybe we can go for him in the future if and when the opportunity arises. For now, it is best if we invest our funds in an experienced defensive midfielder. With Kante close to leaving the club, it will be better to pursue a top midfielder now who can bring stability in the middle of the park.
