Fabrizio Romano on Twitter has confirmed Chelsea have rejected a third offer for Mason Mount from Manchester United. The bid likely to be over £55m fell short of the Blues’ demand of £65 million (£58 million upfront, £7 million in add-ons).
It is also revealed that the Blues have made a counterproposal of around £58 million plus £7 million in add-ons and urged United to meet in person to come to terms for Mount’s transfer.
We now run the risk that that Manchester United could now pull out of the race, as it was expected to be the club’s last offer. Whether they are willing to take one more punt remains to be seen.
Man United were also open to discussing the deal had Chelsea accepted their offe. But now it depends on the Old Trafford outfit if they want to continue the pursuit or walk away.
Despite the Blues’ wanting to keep him, the midfielder has shown no inclination towards renewing his contract. It makes more sense for us to cash in while the rod is hot than risk losing him on a free next year.
Mount’s agent earlier told Chelsea that they wouldn’t sign a new contract. The 24-year-old has one year left on his contract, and if the Blues fail to sell him this summer window, he could depart on a Bosman in 2024.
United’s head coach Erik Ten Hag has been a fan of the England national team and tried signing when he was at Ajax Amsterdam five years ago. As long as Man United fork out the cash, they could work together beginning this summer.
Mount has already agreed to personal terms with United and now depends on both teams, his departure seems likely. Chelsea believes it can receive a better price from United for the 24-year-old, which is why they turned down their offer.
They have made a counteroffer, which United may match considering that their third offer was for £55 million. If they are successful in doing so, both parties will be happy, and United will finally get Mount. We have successfully forced them to bid three times, so now they should be able to match Mount’s changed asking price.
