Chelsea will step up their efforts over the signing of Moises Caicedo after Brighton & Hove Albion rejected an opening bid worth £60 million for the midfielder.
According to the Daily Mail, the Seagulls want around £80 million for the Ecuadorian defensive midfielder, a small fortune in itself. However, given his performances of late, it can be deemed a fair price for a player who can do a job for us for the next decade.
Chelsea wants to quickly sign Caicedo after their star midfielder N’Golo Kante moved to Saudi club Al-Ittihad. The Frenchman’s absence leaves a huge void in the middle of the park for the Blues.
The Blues could also see the departure of more players in the coming days. Mateo Kovacic has agreed personal terms to join Manchester City. Having lost Jorginho last January, Chelsea will be in vital need of a midfield rebuild this summer.
More so, the Blues are looking to balance the wage bill as they have complied with the Financial Fair Play rule after large spending in the previous two transfer windows. However, going big for Caicedo is more of a priority than a luxury.
The absence of Kante in the previous season due to injury affected Chelsea’s performance in the game as they were outmaneuvered by the opponents. Caicedo also previously attracted the attention of Arsenal, who have now shifted their focus to Declan Rice.
It is also understood that Caicedo is close to agreeing personal terms with Chelsea, and there are just talks between both clubs to find a solution. The sooner we can find level ground, the easier it will be to secure his signature.
Caicedo is an experienced player and will take no time to adjust to the demands of the Premier League. His high-energy style and ability to read the game could see him become a mainstay for us for years to come.
Knowing that Conor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s futures are still up in the air, we should now focus on also bringing players in. Caicedo is an excellent option but the Blues need more than just him to rekindle their ambitions for silverware.
