Chelsea tells Kai Havertz to either sign a contract or be sold in summer

Chelsea have warned Kai Havertz that he must sign a new contract or risk being moved in the coming summer as Real Madrid pushes for his signing.

According to Mail Online, (h/t Metro) the Blues won’t obstruct Havertz’s desire to quit the West Londoners, and they will permit him to remain unless he signs a new deal.

Following the departure of Karim Benzema, who agreed to a €100 million (£85.8 million)-per-season move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad.

Real Madrid have shown a strong desire to recruit the 23-year-old, as they regard Havertz as a potential successor. According to a report in Germany, the Blues have set Havertz’s asking price at €60 million (£52 million).

The German international has been at Chelsea for three years following his £75.8 million (€85 million) move from Bayern Leverkusen in 2020, and the 23-year-old enjoyed a mixed season at Chelsea.

However, this season, Havertz has played as a striker and has netted just seven goals in 35 Premier League games. With Chelsea looking to minimise their overflowing squad, the German international could be among the players who can leave once the transfer window opens.

Havertz is still a great player and might be helpful for the new manager in the upcoming season. His ability to hold onto the ball for as long as he wants and locate openings is his most underappreciated trait, which is why he prefers to operate from behind the striker.

However, considering that the club wants to balance their payroll and add other players to make reinforcements in a few areas, Chelsea are willing to trade him if Real Madrid make a good offer. Now it’s up to him to decide whether to stay or leave, or whether to sign a new deal and play under Mauricio Pochettino next year.
