As per Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports, via Nathan Gissing, Chelsea have rejected an opening bid by Arsenal for German forward Kai Havertz. The Gunners will return with a new offer though.
Havertz is open to the move to the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal are positive that Chelsea won’t hold out for the £75m asking price for the player.
The interesting thing here is that there is no figure given to what Arsenal bid. Was there a massive gap in price between the bid and Chelsea’s asking price? One would assume so to be the case.
It makes sense for Havertz to try and get a move away from Chelsea though. The German although has a name etched into the club’s folklore for scoring in the 2021 Champions League final, has lacked consistency in performances otherwise.
The German international is a technically solid player who can do well as a number 10, but Chelsea managers in his time so far have chiefly played him as a nine. While he did well there for Bayer Leverkusen, the same thing could not get reciprocated here.
Forget £75m, if the Blues get anywhere that amount for Havertz’s sale, they should bite the hand off. There are two reasons for it. First, he hasn’t had a good time at Chelsea, which means his value has taken a dip compared to what it was when the club signed him (2020 summer).
Second, he is not a striker or a goalkeeper. A player who is still finding his best position at an elite level (no bashing his quality though), he should not be worth as high as that. We know the market is crazy, but based on what Havertz has done in the last 24 months, he is not worth £75m.
