According to The Express, Chelsea are ready to sell German star Kai Havertz to arch-rivals Arsenal in the 2023 summer transfer window.
The 24-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge from Bayer Leverkusen with massive potential and was among the Bundesliga’s best young talents back in 2020. While Havertz has enjoyed some fine moments in Blue, his overall level of performances have fallen well below expectations.
A return of 32 goals and 15 assists in 139 appearances across all competitions isn’t noteworthy. Chelsea would have expected much more out of a player they paid a whopping £72million for.
Havertz could yet salvage his stay in London but might have to do so in the red of Arsenal. The Gunners are serious about landing the attacker and are ready to make their move.
The Blues for their part are ready to sell the star but only on their terms. Given that Chelsea are under pressure to meet FFP requirements, it is essential that we get top dollar for the players sold this summer.
Chelsea are seeking £70m for the 24-year-old, a price that Arsenal are unwilling to match. The Gunners, for their part are seeking a deal worth £60m including add-ons. Real Madrid are also in the fray for Havertz but are also unwilling to bid top dollar.
Arsenal appear willing to pay Havertz £250,000 a week in wages, should he move to The Emirates. This will see him become the club’s second-highest earner, only behind Gabriel Jesus. Given Havertz’s struggles of late, Mikel Arteta’s side are indeed making the 24-year-old a generous offer.
A versatile player, Havertz is capable of donning several hats anywhere along the frontline and even in midfield if necessary. A change of scenery could do him good and Arsenal could indeed offer him the opportunity.
Given that Chelsea are under pressure to sell players before June 30, it puts us in a disadvantageous position when it comes to negotiations. It remains to be seen if we are willing to lower our demands and reach a compromise that is more to Arsenal’s advantage.
Havertz’s stint at Chelsea can be seen as underwhelming at best. Regardless of how things turn out this summer, he will always be remembered as the hero of our 2021 UEFA Champions League triumph. While we should rather not sell him to a direct rival, the club’s financial position could make the decision untenable.
