Mason Mount is set to leave Chelsea for Manchester United this summer. The transfer saga is finally done and dusted.
According to the Athletic’s David Ornstein (h/t Subscription Required), the Red Devils made a bid of £55million plus £5million in difficult add-ons. This has been accepted by the Blues.
Earlier, Manchester United’s £55million bid was rejected and Chelsea wanted £58million plus £7million in add-ons. But the two teams have apparently reached a compromise since then over the 24-year-old England international.
Finally. It was inevitable that he would leave us this summer after it became clear he wouldn’t renew his contract. It is better than losing him for nothing next year.
And in all honesty, this is a premium fee for a player set to enter the final 12 months of his deal who isn’t really an irreplaceable part of this Chelsea set-up. Of course, it hurts to see an academy graduate go, that too to a rival.
And at 24, he is just getting started. But it is about making the most of the situation for Chelsea, and they certainly did.
Constantly rebuffing Manchester United’s bid and approach seems to have worked out well for us. No complaints from our side. Let’s hope this fund now goes towards signing a proper defensive midfielder.
It would make sense to sign a player who can also contribute offensively. Mount could play as a No. 8, as a No. 10 and down the flanks. He was a smart box-to-box midfielder.
It wouldn’t be a bad idea to search for a player of his profile. But that shouldn’t mean we abandon our chance for a defensive midfielder — Moises Caicedo of Brighton & Hove Albion being a serious target for Mauricio Pochettino.
