Chelsea star in contention to replace misfiring rival ace in the English setup

Gareth Southgate calls up Chelsea star Levi Colwill for England

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill has emerged as a potential rival to Manchester United outcast Harry Maguire and his position in the English senior squad.

According to the Daily Mail, Colwill was called up by England head coach Gareth Southgate ahead of the Three Lions games this summer at St George’s Park.

The youngster, who had a successful loan at Brighton Hove & Albion, has returned to Chelsea, where they will rely on him for the upcoming season. Colwill has built up a solid reputation for him and is among the best young defenders in the league today.

The England manager feels the 20-year-old could break into England’s starting lineup before the 2024 European Championship in Germany. Colwill has developed steadily into a bright prospect during his time at the Seagulls, and is a centre-back who is comfortable to their possession-based brand of football.

Chelsea made a great decision by sending the centre-back on loan to Brighton, where he matured into an experienced defender. They will now hope that he can be a big part of the club’s project next season under Mauricio Pochettino.

Colwill could be a regular defender given that Benoit Badiashile will miss the opening matches of next season due to injury. The Englishman could pair up with Wesely Fofana for following campaign at the heart of the Blues’ defence.

Colwill is at a crucial juncture in his career since he will sooner rather than later make his senior bow for the Three Lions. If his outstanding club performance continues, he might be chosen for the Euros in 2024.

He will, hopefully, play a significant role for the Blues next season since they have a young, promising defender on their hands, and it is Mauricio Pochettino’s responsibility to assist him in growing.

With Kalidou Koulibaly and Thiago Silva’s futures in doubt, he might step in as their replacement for the upcoming campaign. If all goes according to plan, the best is yet to come from Colwill.
