According to the Evening Standard Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly has officially completed his move to Saudi club Al-Hilal as the Blues continue their mass exodus in the summer transfer window.
His departure, has seen the Blues get his £200,000-a-week wages off the books and recoup £17 million in transfer fee. Tis should give Chelsea some leeway when it comes to bringing in reinforcements.
The former Napoli defender laboured in his lone season at Chelsea after joining last summer for a £33 million deal. The Senegalese defender made 32 appearances for the West Londoners across all competitions, but failed to leave a lasting impact.
His move has also paved the way to sell more unwanted players at the club, as Hakim Ziyech and Edouard Mendy are on the verge of joining Al-Nassr and Al-Ahli, respectively.
Meanwhile, N’Golo Kante joined Al-Ittihad for free, and Kai Havertz has completed the first part of his medical for Arsenal and will join them for around £65 million.
The Blues have made a respectable amount of money, but they still have a few players they may sell before the end of the summer window. Chelsea are also actively seeking out new players, and the club has already made its first signing of the summer with the acquisition of Nicolas Jackson from Villarreal.
It will be a long summer for the West Londoners, as there are still some areas where Chelsea requires enhancement. Once we complete the exodus, attention should turn to recruitment and a freshening up of the roster.
It’s unfortunate that Koulibaly had to leave Chelsea after just one season, but his performances left much to be desired. More so, his exit should free up game time for the younger players on our roster, especially the returning Levi Colwill.
Since the league in Saudi Arabia is less competitive, Koulibaly will lead a more laid-back life there and earn a respectable wage.In many ways, the deal is a win-win for all parties involved.
