As per David Ornstein of the Athletic, Chelsea have agreed on terms with Villarreal striker Nicolas Jackson intending to sign him this summer.
It is also revealed that the payment of the release clause, which is €35m, will be enough for the Blues to sign the striker. The player is committed to moving to the club.
A few days ago, Evening Standard disclosed that Chelsea are interested in signing Jackson, a player available for a price range lower than some of their transfer targets in his position (Victor Osimhen et al).
We all know that the Blues should sign a centre-forward in this transfer window to have a chance of climbing up the table next season.
Currently, the squad has a lot of creative players who can chip in 10-odd goals. There is no one who can consistently put the ball into the back of the net. In fact, since Diego Costa left about five years ago, Chelsea haven’t had a striker who can score 25 goals per season. The club have spent a lot in that department, but none of the options have worked so far.
Jackson, a 21-year-old Senegal international, had an excellent debut season for the Villarreal senior team. He was playing for their youth teams since 2019 before spending a season on loan at Mirandes.
During the 2022/23 season, the striker scored 13 goals and assisted five in just over 2000 minutes of playing time (38 appearances). That is a pretty good rate.
If and when Jackson comes to Chelsea, he won’t be short on chances to score goals as the Blues squad do have excellent technical players who know how to carve out opposition defences. The aggressive tactical approach from Mauricio Pochettino may help his game too.
