A View From The Bridge

Chelsea unwilling to lower the huge price tag placed on Arsenal target

Chelsea unwilling to lower their £75 million valuation of Mason Mount

According to The Mirror, Chelsea are unwilling to lower their asking price of £75 million for English midfielder Mason Mount in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The Blues are in for another busy window with several players coming and going. One major name that looks likely to depart is Mount, who has already agreed personal terms with Manchester United.

The 24-year-old’s current contract expires in the summer of 2024 and he is no closer to penning an extension. That being said, this summer represents Chelsea’s best chance of cashing in on him and securing as much as they can.

Mount is not short of options with Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal all interested. While the Red Devils might have the early momentum, a deal is far from done. Hopefully, all three clubs enter a bidding war that will significantly boost our chances of landing a decent amount.

The Blues’ splurges in the last two transfer windows coupled with the failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League leaves the club in a precarious position. We cannot afford to let players go on cheap, lest we fall foul of FFP regulations.

A £55 million fee is more or less seen as a fair price for a player of Mount’s stature in the current market, especially given his contract situation. However, the Blues continue to play hardball and are seeking £75 million.

Given that we look likely to lose him, we personally do not care which of our rivals he joins as long as they pay us what we want. Hopefully, the club holds firm and secures the fee they are looking for, making reinvestment easier for Mauricio Pochettino and co.

The Chelsea midfield appears to be the subject of a summer makeover at Stamford Bridge. Jorginho left last January while N’Golo Kante is yet to pen an extension. With Mount and Mateo Kovacic also on their way out, Todd Boehly will need to bring in some new players.

Losing a player who came through the academy like Mount is always sad. But landing both Moises Caicedo and Manuel Ugarte will certainly make us feel better about the whole ordeal.
