A View From The Bridge

Italian sensation has no regrets over swapping Serie A giants for Chelsea

Italian midfielder Cesare Casadei does not regret leaving Inter Milan to join Chelsea last summer

The young Italian midfielder Cesare Casadei insists that he does not regret leaving Inter Milan last summer to join Chelsea.

Casadei was a youth player at Inter and hadn’t made a senior debut there. Chelsea signed him last summer for a fee of around £12m plus add-ons.

The situation at Stamford Bridge is that the 20-year-old did not play a single minute for the senior team here as well. But, he did well in the U-20 World Cup in Argentina last summer and should be in the reckoning to be a part of the first-team squad under Mauricio Pochettino next season.

Here’s what Casadei said when asked about his decision to sign for Chelsea (h/t Football.London, quoted by Football Italia, interview at SportWeek):

“It’s an experience that is teaching me a lot in every aspect. I’m really happy with the choice I made along with my agent Paolo Busardò.

“It wasn’t the easiest option, but I wanted to take this opportunity because the chance to sign for a team like Chelsea, might only come up a few times in your career, if not only once.

“Today, I can say that this experience is giving me a lot from both a human and professional point of view. I feel like I’ve improved a lot since coming here.”

What these quotes tell us is that the player is ambitious about making it big at Chelsea. For that reason, he has no regrets about signing for the Blues despite not playing for the senior team yet.

If people had seen his performances in Argentina, they would have been calling to get the youngster into the Chelsea XI sooner rather than later.

Casadei scored seven goals and assisted two in seven games in the U-20 World Cup from midfield. He led Italy to the final of that competition before losing to Uruguay.

The Italian is a central midfielder who can impact a game in both boxes and has a wicked eye for a goal or two. He can run all day for the team and is aerially gifted as well for a midfielder.

Let’s hope that the 20-year-old gets his chance in the pre-season to start with, before potentially getting minutes in the Premier League. Under Pochettino, he should improve because the manager is an expert at developing young players into superstars.
