German champions Bayern Munich are attempting to take advantage of Manchester United’s failure to recruit Mason Mount after Chelsea rejected their third offer earlier this week.
According to the Guardian, (h/t Metro) former Blues boss Thomas Tuchel wants Bayern to hijack Manchester United’s pursuit of Mason Mount. Having worked together while at Stamford Bridge, he is well aware of the midfielder’s quality.
United’s third bid included £50 million plus £5 million in add-ons and fell short of Chelsea’s £65 million asking price. It remains to be seen if a compromise can be reached between both clubs.
This has seen the United board discontent with how Chelsea are negotiating Mount’s deal. They feel the Blues are applying ‘Manchester United tax’ to the 24-year-old, especially when he has just one year left on his current deal at the Bridge.
While the Red Devils remain interested in signing the England International, they have joined Chelsea in the race for Moises Caicedo. Tuchel and Mount worked together during the German coach’s time at Chelsea, as they went on to win the Champions League in 2021.
Mount joining Bayern will inject new energy into the Bavarians’ midfield, and his familiarity with Tuchel’s system does make life easier. Earlier, the 2022–23 German Champions showed interest in signing Mateo Kovacic, but the Croatian has now joined Manchester City.
Given their positive relationship at Chelsea and Mount’s success under the former Borussia Dortmund boss, Tuchel may be able to persuade the 24-year-old to join Bayern. However, Chelsea have little reason to sell unless their asking price is met.
Sending him to Man United is a risk, especially given that we will be strengthening a direct rival. Hopefully, the deal can be concluded on our terms, providing Todd Boehly and co with the finances needed to rebuild the Blues roster.
