Chelsea agree a deal with Arsenal to sell Kai Havertz
As per the Athletic (subscription required), Chelsea have agreed a deal worth around £65m with Arsenal to sell German forward Kai Havertz in this summer transfer window.
It is revealed that the Gunners will pay £62m upfront and £3m in add-ons. Personal terms are agreed and a medical will take place in due course of time.
Chelsea are aiming to trim their squad under the management of Mauricio Pochettino ahead of the start of the next season. They have already agreed a deal to sell Mateo Kovacic to Manchester City. N’Golo Kante has left the club to sign with Saudi club Al Ittihad. Now, Havertz is set to sign for Arsenal.
Three years ago, the Blues spent around £75.8m to sign the German international from Bayer Leverkusen. Getting close to that money in return despite the player’s underperformance in the team is some business.
Havertz did not have a great outing in a Chelsea shirt for the last three seasons. He struggled for consistency and ruthlessness in and around the opposition box when asked to play the false nine role.
The 24-year-old’s name will however be etched in the club’s history for scoring the winner in the 2021 Champions League final against City.
He played so well that night and took his goal well. If he would have repeated those sorts of performances a few more times since then, Chelsea might have wanted to keep him and build this new team around him.
