Andy Cole has claimed Mason Mount will not benefit the team if Manchester United succeeds in signing the Chelsea player in the summer transfer window.
The midfielder has just one year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge, and United are the favourites to sign him. And despite discussions about his contract extension, Chelsea were unable to persuade the 24-year-old to stay put.
Although other teams like Liverpool and Arsenal are also interested in signing Mount, United continues to lead the race and have already reached an agreement with the player regarding personal terms.
In order to sign the 24-year-old, it is now believed that United are prepared to offer Harry Maguire to Chelsea. While we could do with a centre-back, it is an offer we should pass on.
Mount has a good pedigree and has ample experience. However, not everyone at Man United is on board regarding his potential impact. Cole, a former United player, has stated that Mount won’t fit in with the team at Old Trafford. (h/t Metro) Speaking to FA Cup Odds, he said:
‘’None of the Chelsea players improve Manchester United. They can’t be any worse next season; otherwise, they’ll be in big trouble. I know there’s talk of Mason Mount; he’s a decent player who works hard and puts in a shift.”
“But Manchester United need someone with that X-factor and flair. Someone like Jude Bellingham drives the team forward.’’
Mount is one of the brightest prospects in Europe, and if you believe he isn’t the player who can improve you, that’s a matter of debate. While he has enjoyed a poor season, there is no reason to believe that Erik ten Hag cannot rekindle his fortunes.
Also, he is just 24, and if United are able to sign him, then they have a player who is a long-term solution in midfield for the club. United signed the likes of Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic, and they all were key parts of United for many seasons.
And if you think Mount isn’t an instrumental player, then you should watch the Champions League final, where he performed spectacularly and also gave Kai Havertz a goal that resulted in Chelsea winning the trophy.
