Chelsea contact AC Milan over signing 27-year-old star

AC Milan contacted by Chelsea regarding transfer of Mike Maignan

Chelsea have made contact with Serie A giants AC Milan regarding acquiring the services of shot-stopper Mike Maignan, according to L’Equipe (h/t The Sun).

The Blues have opened talks with the Italian outfit for their talented goalkeeper ahead of the upcoming transfer window. To that end, the Stamford Bridge side have enquired about the availability of the France international.

Mauricio Pochettino was appointed the new head coach of the West London club recently. The Argentine has already drawn up a list of potential targets, including the Rossoneri’s 27-year-old.

The former Tottenham Hotspur manager has Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga at his disposal for now. However, he is not satisfied with the Senegalese or the Spaniard and has identified Maignan as the potential new number one.

Unfortunately, Milan have no intention of parting ways with their shot-stopper. The Serie A giants will think about selling the France international only in case a massive offer arrives.

The goalkeeper joined the Italian outfit in the summer of 2021 from LOSC Lille after the departure of Gianluigi Donnarumma. Over the last two seasons, the 27-year-old has been one of the best players in the world in between the sticks.

As for Chelsea, Mendy seems to have lost confidence since the AFCON win with his national side in 2022. The Senegalese was key in our Champions League winning campaign a few years back. Unfortunately, the 31-year-old has been error-prone over the last few months.

Kepa Arrizabalaga has struggled at the Blues since making his way from Athletic Bilbao. The Spaniard’s inconsistency has seen be in and out of the team. But in the 2022/23 season, the 28-year-old was mostly the first choice for us.

Considering how we have performed recently, the Stamford Bridge side evidently need a squad overhaul. If Mauricio Pochettino is not comfortable with either of the options he has at the moment, the West London club should back the gaffer and pursue Maignan.
