Vincent Kompany only got into management in 2020 with RSC Anderlecht but in the space of just three years, found himself linked with the managerial jobs at Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.
However, he has apparently put an end to those links by signing a new long-term deal at Burnley, his current deal. As per the Express, the 37-year-old manager said after penning fresh terms:
“Burnley and Turf Moor felt right pretty much from the start – so it also feels right to sign for the next five years. Together with the fans, we have made Turf Moor a fortress again and continue to look forward to the future and the job of making Burnley better with every step
His new deal extends his stay at Turf Moor until 2028. That has more or less ended Chelsea’s chances of making a surprise appointment. Kompany was appointed as Burnley’s boss last summer.
While the Clarets were always a favourite to win promotion back to the Premier League, the Manchester City legend helped them win the Championship. It is also not an easy feat besting 23 teams in the second division who, arguably, more or less operate at a similar level in terms of quality.
Chelsea are now closing on appointing Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager. The Blues have been without a permanent boss since Graham Potter’s sacking on April 2, with Frank Lampard working in an interim capacity.
The job at Chelsea or even Tottenham Hotspur, who have Ryan Mason as their interim boss, would have come too early in Kompany’s young managerial career. He needs to earn his stripes in the big time first.
How Burnley do in the Premier League next season, and how Kompany deals with a team potentially fighting for relegation or midtable positions will showcase how he manages in situations where the pressure is on him.
