Thiago Silva declared that he wants to complete his Chelsea contract and added that he would leave the team only if the Blues want him to.
Earlier, it was reported that the Brazilian central defender could the team after the current campaign, and Chelsea will permit him to go if he decides to relocate back to Brazil. His former club Fluminense has been linked with a summer deal.
The former defender for Paris Saint-Germain just extended his contract for an additional year, keeping him on the team until 2024.
The 38-year-old received additional recognition for his efforts when Chelsea supporters revealed banners in his favour during the match against Nottingham Forest. The Chelsea ace is arguably the club’s most consistent defender.
When ESPN questioned the former AC Milan defender following the game regarding his future at Chelsea, (h/t Football.London) he responded as follows:
“It’s even boring for me, but I’ve renewed with Chelsea for two months, if I’m not mistaken. “I’ve always fulfilled my contracts. I just won’t stay here if Chelsea don’t want me for next year or if the new coach arrives and doesn’t want me to stay.”
“Furthermore, I’m going to try to fulfil my contract that is signed until next year. Then, next year, we’ll see what we can really do.”
Silva has aged like fine wine and demonstrates no evidence of slowing down. His experience is key for younger defenders like Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile, both of who are expected to become Stamford Bridge mainstays for years to center-backs in the future.
We must also bear in mind that we will need an alternative for him because we cannot use him in every match and must give other defenders opportunities as well.
The news that Silva will stay at the club for another year is encouraging and we hope he completes his Chelsea contract before leaving.
