Huge boost for Chelsea as influential figure returns to training ahead of Forest clash

Reece James will miss the last game of the season but is determined to challenge for trophies next season

As per his Instagram story (h/t Metro), Chelsea defender Reece James apologises to the fans for a horror season and vows to challenge for trophies next season.

The interim boss Frank Lampard confirmed that James will miss the final game of this campaign against Newcastle United with a hamstring injury.

The 23-year-old has been out of action since the defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final. It has been another season where he has missed quite a few games due to injuries.

He wrote on his Instagram stories:

“I’m sure you’ve seen the news. I wont be back for the last game. It’s been tough for me. I’m sorry this szn hasn’t gone as we all wanted. Next szn I’ll be back stronger than ever, and we’ll be back fighting for trophies! Stay well and see u soon. Love u all – Reece.”

Chelsea are set to finish in the bottom half of the league table irrespective of what happens on Sunday. They weren’t good enough in either of the domestic cup competitions as well.

The club hierarchy had a terrible season if we are being honest. Signing 15 players in the two transfer windows without selling much made no sense.

It bloated the squad with numbers and no harmony. First, it was Thomas Tuchel, then Graham Potter and now Lampard struggling to get the best out of the players.

The incoming boss Mauricio Pochettino must come and quickly decide which players and who to sell. Once that is done, then he and his staff can think about signing new players. Chelsea must get a striker in the summer if they are to get back in the top four next season. Can they attract a good one without European football? We will wait and see.

Lastly on James, in the last 18 months, the England international has missed tonnes of games due to muscle injuries. At 23, he should be playing more often, especially given how important he is to the team. We hope that he has a good pre-season and then some luck with injuries next season onwards.
