A View From The Bridge

29-year-old Manchester City target ‘likely’ to leave Chelsea this summer

Mateo Kovacic likely to leave Chelsea in the summer with interest from clubs

The Guardian reports that Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic is ‘likely’ to leave Chelsea in the coming summer with interest from a number of clubs.

Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Manchester City are interested in signing the former Real Madrid player, whose contract at Stamford Bridge expires next summer.

Kovacic is expected to become one of the many players to leave Chelsea in the coming summer window. Having made a plethora of signings in the last two windows, the bloated squad needs to be trimmed soon.

Todd Boehly and co. are reluctant to keep the players who have one year of contract left in the summer. Kovacic falls in that category.

The club is also under pressure to generate money from the sales. With no European football next season, the income through participating in the continental competition won’t be there as well.

Kovacic was one of the key Chelsea players when Thomas Tuchel was in charge of the team. No wonder the latter wants the former in his team at Bayern.

The 29-year-old won’t be short on options in the Premier League as well, with both the Manchester clubs eyeing a move for him. City may need to strengthen because they are likely to lose Ilkay Gundogan this summer on a free transfer.

The former Madrid midfielder has been an excellent servant for Chelsea. His work rate, pass accuracy and general robustness in the midfield will be missed.

The Blues have Enzo Fernandez in the midfield alongside N’Golo Kante. Metro has reported that the incoming manager Mauricio Pochettino will aim to sign a central midfielder to supplement the options he may have.

If this season is Kovacic’s last at Chelsea, his time at Stamford Bridge will be remembered for all the good things he did for the team.
