Mason Mount is not close to a new Chelsea deal despite Mauricio Pochettino claim
Evening Standard reports that Chelsea star Mason Mount is no closer than before to signing a new deal with the club despite Mauricio Pochettino’s claims to make him a key player.
Metro reported that the incoming Chelsea boss wants to keep the player and designate him as one of the key players in the squad.
Mount’s contract at Stamford Bridge expires next summer. The Guardian revealed that Todd Boehly and co. are letting go of players once they enter the final 12 months of their stay unless a new deal is agreed. For that very reason and the need to trim the squad, Mateo Kovacic is likely to leave this summer.
Till now, the 24-year-old is no closer to extending his stay in West London. He wants to be paid at par with the squad’s highest earners. He probably deserves that after winning the club’s Player of the Year in the last two seasons. There are image rights issues as well.
Liverpool have earmarked him as their primary target for the summer window. Arsenal and Newcastle United are also in the race, but the Reds are ahead.
It would be a massive if Chelsea lose a player like Mount in such a way. The Englishman is 24, with the peak of his career about to come. He has been one of the best players on the team in the last two seasons.
Moreover, the attacking midfielder is a versatile player. He can play as one of the number eights, is comfortable as a 10, can play in wide areas and has been used as a false nine too.

The other factor would be him potentially playing for a direct rival in the Premier League next season onward. Selling him is improving a team that will be one of the challengers in the league along with Chelsea. Quite bizarre that!
