Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy has reacted positively to the update that Chelsea are very close to appointing Mauricio Pochettino as their next permanent manager.
We have been without a head coach since Graham Potter’s sacking in early April. Frank Lampard has been our caretaker boss for the last eight games
Fabrizio Romano wrote on Twitter about Chelsea’s pursuit of Poch:
“Mauricio Pochettino will sign contract in the next days but he will start this new Chelsea chapter in June, now now — as Lampard will remain as caretaker coach. #CFC Poch will bring in his people for coaching staff — he will discuss transfer strategy with club immediately.”
It seems that the 51-year-old is headed to SW6 and Cundy, who played as a defender for Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur among other teams, was asked to give his reaction to the news. He told Sky Sports:
“My reaction is about time. This has been in the pipeline for some time. In the last three weeks I’ve heard the deal has been done. They’ve obviously been going through all the little bits and pieces that these contracts take. Delighted with the news. The club needs stability.”
Pochettino can work with the squad that he inherits. We have spent a lot of money under Todd Boehly already and have signed young players like Mykhaylo Mudryk, Enzo Fernandez and Benoit Badiashile for the future.
What we need is a manager who can work with what he has. Poch can be that man, as he was at Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). This is good work from the Chelsea owners.
The Argentine manager, as Cundy suggested, will bring some much-needed stability here. Graham Potter was a wildcard appointment given his inexperience with a truly ‘big’ European team. Thomas Tuchel’s sacking was even more bewildering while Frank Lampard’s re-appointment made no sense whatsoever.
Let’s hope the owners stop experimenting for a while and Pochettino is given due time for his medicine to work at Stamford Bridge.
