“We’ve deserved that twist of luck”- Frank Lampard gives verdict on Bournemouth’s penalty shout vs Chelsea

Frank Lampard gives verdict on Bournemouth’s penalty shout vs Chelsea

Chelsea caretaker manager Frank Lampard has given his verdict on Bournemouth’s penalty call in the west Londoners’ 3-1 league win on Saturday (May 6).

The Blues took the lead through a header from Conor Gallagher before Matias Vina equalised at the Vitality before the half-time whistle. Chelsea pushed for the winner in the second half.

But Bournemouth had a big chance to go ahead in the 67th minute when Dominic Solanke was brought down by Thiago Silva in the box. On-field referee John Brooks did not think it was a penalty.

VAR David Coote didn’t think there was a clear and obvious error to overturn the on-field call. But on a closer look, it can’t be said that Silva got the ball.

Clear pen or not?

It seemed like the Brazilian legend took down the English striker illegally. Of course, the decision remains open to interpretation and there was indeed some doubt if there was contact with the ball or not.

Lampard didn’t admit it was a penalty but said that if it was, then Chelsea deserved a bit of luck in this instance. Speaking after his team’s win against the Cherries, the former Everton manager told BBC MOTD:

“On first viewing I thought it wasn’t. But if you say it wasn’t and VAR says it wasn’t, that’s good enough for me. Maybe in the period of time since I’ve been here, we’ve deserved that twist of luck – if it was a twist of luck.”

Benoit Badiashile scored a scrappy goal in the 82nd minute before Joao Felix sealed the three points four points later. We lost all six games across competitions under Lampard before this – with some of them being due to a mixture of poor performances and bad luck.

We are nowhere near European football and will end the season without silverware. But it is important that we end the remainder of the games on a high so we can carry that momentum into the next season.
