“A big squad”- Frank Lampard admits Chelsea are spoilt for choice amidst recent struggles

Frank Lampard blames bloated Chelsea squad for forcing him to conduct different training session

Frank Lampard has revealed that Chelsea FC’s large roster is preventing him from developing any tactical coherence, although he hopes it will be addressed during the summer.

With over 32 players now on the roster thanks to two generous transfer windows, it was previously difficult for Graham Potter to run a seamless training session. Now interim manager Lampard is dealing with the same issue.

Lampard is giving feedback to co-controlling owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali after losing all of the games since returning to the Chelsea bench. It is far from the triumphant homecoming that he would have envisaged.

Chelsea’s next match is against Bournemouth and we will need to finally get back to winning ways. If we lose, it will mark the first time the Blues have lost seven straight games since the 1960–61 season.

However, as he spoke to the media at Cobham, (h/t Evening Standard), Lampard brought up the issue of the huge squad and said he was unable to carry out training because of the 32-man roster.

“We obviously have a big squad, which I think was done with all the right intentions, but of course, managing that and getting a really tight, connected unit, which is the first thing in post, is difficult.”

“If you don’t have that, it is very tough, and that has been very challenging. It’s something that should and will be addressed going forward.”

At Chelsea, Graham Potter experienced the same situation that Lampard is currently experiencing. Given that we needed to strengthen key areas and that half of our team was injured, we cannot hold Todd Boehly responsible for the abundance of impulsive additions.

And it is evident that holding training sessions is getting harder now that every player is fit, and is resulting in an excessive workload on Lampard. Given that he wont be around next season, Lampard is better off choosing to work with a core group of players. After all, what we need at this moment in time is to rediscover the winning touch.

The club will need to sell a lot of surplus players during the summer transfer window in order to enable the incoming manager to have a smaller roster and a more manageable workload.
