Frank Lampard asks Chelsea owner Todd Boehly to retain faith in managerial appointments

Frank Lampard has urged Chelsea owner Todd Boehly to back the next manager. He called upon the American to take advice from competing teams and support the long-term project of the new manager.

One of the players to carve out a place for himself in Chelsea’s history, Lampard will serve as Chelsea’s interim manager until the end of the season. He also won three championships and a Champions League during his playing career before taking over as their manager for the 2019–20 campaign; however, he was eventually fired.

Following Graham Potter’s dismissal, he is back in the role of interim manager while the Blues search for the right one for the upcoming campaign. However, his second spell in charge at Stamford Bridge has been far from rosy with the club losing all five games so far.

Under Boehly, the club spent over £600 million on 18 acquisitions, bringing the total number of players in the squad to a rather bloated 32. Furthermore, two managers have been fired midway through the campaign.

According to the Evening Standard, Lampard encouraged Boehly to stop the hiring and dismissal of managers and said that it had caused the squad to be held back. Lampard added:

“I was always part of the Chelsea team that changed managers regularly. With casual hindsight, it is easy to say I had great success. I won three league titles, but I should have won five or six. That’s my feeling if we’d had more consistency and been able to work in one direction, and I feel like we should have done.”

“If you are trying to work for something, you look at the successful models at the top end of the league at the moment and you see managers that have been working in there a long time, recruitment that is aligned with the type of squad and identity they want to bring, and it works in a direction.”

What Lampard claimed is undoubtedly accurate. Throughout the Roman Abramovich era, Chelsea never had a manager stay with the team long-term. However, Boehly seems more trigger-happy than the Russian.

Under Boehly’s control, it appears that the same thing would go on, as two managers were fired under him. Because of these circumstances, Chelsea’s fans have become impatient and call for the manager’s dismissal anytime he fails to provide results.

And if we truly must implement the approaches of Arsenal, City, or Liverpool, we’ll need to give our new manager some time—possibly even a whole season—to get Chelsea back on the competitive track. Abandoning a rebuild on an impulse halfway is never the solution.
