“More money than us”- Manchester City CEO accuses Chelsea of outspending

Ferran Soriano accuses Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United of outspending Manchester City

Ferran Soriano, the CEO of Manchester City, took a dig at Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United’s expenditures, claiming the trio have outspent Manchester City in recent times. This comes on the heels of City beating Real Madrid en route to the UEFA Champions League final.

He declined to respond to the statement that the City’s success was a result of their repeated huge expenditures. Chelsea, under Todd Boehly’s authority, have spent lavishly over the last two transfer windows.

Chelsea have spent £1.82 billion over the last decade, more than any other team. Chelsea also broke the British transfer record in the winter window when they signed Enzo Fernandez for £107 million.

But as per City’s CEO Soriano, he feels the club has spent less than other Premier League clubs, (h/t Metro) as he told Movistar (h/t Metro):

‘Look, you only have to look at the investment in players in England in the last year, three years, five years… we are never the club spending the most on players.

There are many other clubs investing more money than us: Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal. Saying that we’ve spent a lot of money and we won because of that is just not true.’

Man City deserve credit for outplaying Real Madrid and were worthy winners in their semifinal tie. However, they are still privy to investigations of irregular spending and they can do better than deflect the issue than address them.

There is no denying that Chelsea have spent more in the transfer market than most of the clubs under Roman Abramovich and Todd Boehly. While the former was also able to secure trophies, the latter appears to lack a long term plan.

Manchester United and Arsenal are also heavy spenders but have not thrown away money as much as us or City over the last decade. However, neither side have managed to secure a regular haul of trophies and have largely underachieved.

More Chelsea News:

Chelsea have also won the Champions League twice over the last decade, more than the rest of the English sides put together in the same time period. Manchester City could yet break their duck this season but it’s unbecoming of them to do so given the allegations against them.

To claim they are where they are not because of money is stretching the truth. Sooner or later, the truth has to come out.
