Chelsea legend Emmanuel Petit, while speaking to Genting Casino (h/t Football London) has labelled Raheem Sterling as the biggest flop of the season, despite underwhelming performances from many key players.
Sterling joined Chelsea from Manchester City and there were heavy expectations from the England international, having been a key figure in City’s dominance under Pep Guardiola.
The player was seen as somewhat around which the attack could be built and Sterling being 28, there were no question marks over the age or profile.
However, the move has not gone in the manner as all involved parties would have predicted with the player unable to really stack a claim in the first team with many underwhelming performances.
Petit believes his performances have been underwhelming and not close to the level that he showed at City.
“Raheem Sterling is the Chelsea signing that has disappointed me the most. I don’t want to be too harsh on him and it’s hard to point fingers too much at players because it’s been a mess for at least a year. For me, Sterling stands out as the most disappointing.
I’m a big fan of the player and person, but I have been disappointed with him. In terms of who I would like Chelsea to sign, the answer would be nobody! They already signed enough players, they need to clean the dressing room first.”
One can also point out the fact that the season for Chelsea has been nothing short of a disaster due to many key factors which could directly impact a player’s performance on the pitch.
The change of multiple managers under the new ownership with each one of them playing with a different style of play in addition to a bloated squad with 30 first-team members can all be said to be an important factor in the low form shown by many key players.
With Mauricio Pochettino expected to be in charge of the Chelsea dugout for the upcoming season, there is no clarity over the players that would stay or end up leaving.
Sterling could potentially be one of the players to be let go despite signing just a year back. This is partly due to the number of wingers available in the squad currently.
Even for the player, he would want regular game-time to cement a place in the England squad for the UEFA Euro Championship in 2024, having been dropped out of the next international games by Gareth Southgate.
In conclusion, it is not a pretty situation for everyone involved and there needs to be a detailed talk between the player’s representatives and the club to get clarity over Sterling’s role in the coming season for Chelsea.
