A View From The Bridge

“For sure”: 32-year-old superstar drops major hint on wanting to renew Chelsea contract

Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante drops a major hint of him wanting extend his contract

Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante wants to be a part of the future at the club, a statement which can be taken as a hint that he is looking forward to signing a new contract.

The 2018 World Cup winner’s contract at Stamford Bridge expires in the coming summer (Transfermarkt). He is yet to sign an extension.

A major muscle injury restricted the 32-year-old’s playing time this season. He has only managed to play 685 minutes in all competitions and we are in the middle of May now.

Here’s what Kante said when asked about his willingness to be a part of the future at Chelsea and more (h/t Sky Sports, via The Athletic (subscription required)):

“Yeah for sure [if he would like to be a part of the new Chelsea era].

“It’s an exciting project for the club. Unfortunately the season has not been a standout for Chelsea. I’m sure everyone wants to go this way; the way of success, the way of winning titles. I hope this club will fight again in this direction.

“Let’s see where I will be but I hope that this is a change for the club, that is most important.”

Despite missing so much of the action, Kante became one of Chelsea’s best players upon his comeback. When he made his first start after a long time, he produced a master class in midfield against Liverpool at the Bridge.

The Frenchman is just a machine who can do a lot of things right in the midfield area. Frank Lampard’s idea of playing as an attacking midfielder was a failure though. The former Leicester City star is more of a defensive midfielder who can operate in a box-to-box role.

Kante’s experience, quality, reliability on the field and work rate cannot be questioned. For that very reason, he deserves to stay at the club and be a senior part of the new team being potentially built by the incoming manager Mauricio Pochettino.

More Chelsea News:

Pochettino would love a player like Kante in his squad, isn’t he? The latter has the attributes to play alongside Enzo Fernandez in midfield and dominate games for fun. With a strong midfield base intact, the manager can then look to add flair in the top end of the field.
