Mauricio Pochettino to offer a lifeline to Romelu Lukaku if he becomes Chelsea boss
As per Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Daily Mail), Mauricio Pochettino is set to hand a lifeline to loaned-out striker Romelu Lukaku, provided he becomes the Chelsea boss.
A day ago, Evening Standard reported that Pochettino is still negotiating terms with the Blues without an agent and is in a strong position to demand higher terms given the mess the club is in. The Argentine is all but sure to take the managerial job at Stamford Bridge.
Coming back to Lukaku, the Belgian international is currently on loan at Inter Milan. While he wants to stay in Italy beyond this season, Pochettino would pitch in a project to revitalise his career in West London. The manager-to-be will offer the player enough time for him to decide whether to give the Chelsea gig another go or switch back to Inter.
The 29-year-old has had an iffy season in Italy, with just nine goals and five assists in 28 appearances in all competitions. Injuries early in the campaign did not help his cause. It also made him miss Belgium’s first game of the World Cup.
If we analyse the current Chelsea squad, as much as it is bloated and may need deadwood shifting, there are hardly any genuine goal-scorers in there. Kai Havertz won’t give you 20+ goals a season. For that reason, the team has scored 31 goals in 33 league games. If that is not embarrassing enough for them, Erling Haaland has scored a record-breaking 35 goals in 31 league appearances.
With the Blues set to not play any European competitions next season, signing a new top-quality striker might be difficult, isn’t it?

Hence, it makes sense why Pochettino is willing to speak to Romelu Lukaku and offer him a chance to rekindle his career at Chelsea. If the former can bring the best out of the latter, the Chelsea team will automatically look many-folds better than the current version.
