Chelsea and Manchester City are interested in signing Aston Villa’s Alex Moreno

According to Footmercato (h/t Football.London), Chelsea and Manchester City are interested in signing Aston Villa’s Spanish defender Alex Moreno in the summer window.

Moreno arrived at Villa Park back in January from Real Betis for a deal worth around £13.3m. He has impressed for Unai Emery’s team since making his debut and has provided three assists in 16 league appearances so far.

The 29-year-old is a versatile player who can play as a left-back, left-wing-back or winger on either side. He has been used predominantly as a former by Emery at Villa.

The former Betis player is quick across the ground, does not mind running up and down the field, is comfortable in crossing and is not bad in one-on-one defending in wide areas.

At the moment, Chelsea have two options for the left-back position – Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella. While the former has done well and is most likely to be a part of the new manager’s plans, the latter has had a tough first season at Stamford Bridge since moving from Brighton and Hove Albion last summer.

The decision on Cucurella’s future may rest on the new manager. As of now, Mauricio Pochettino is closing in on becoming the new boss of this team. He is currently negotiating terms on his own to have control of the direction of the club in the right way.

If the Argentine wants to give the Spaniard a chance next season, there is no need to sign Moreno and have three left-back options.

However, if the contrary is the case, then there is logic behind this link. Irrespective of all that, will the Villa man move away from West Midlands six months after signing for them? We would highly doubt so. Hence, it would make sense to ignore this news once it for all.
