According to Daily Mail, incoming Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino will aim to strengthen three positions in the coming summer transfer window.

The Argentine is going to target building a new spine for the team but will understand that his hands are tied given the bloated nature of the current squad.

Pochettino has identified the need for a new goalkeeper, a central midfielder and a number nine. Chelsea signed 15 players in the last two transfer windows. So, they would need to ship some out before thinking of making signings.

With Kepa Arrizabalaga’s future in doubt even when he is starting games regularly and Edouard Mendy yet to sign a new deal, having deemed the previous offer as disrespectful, the incoming boss would be aiming to buy a new goalkeeper.

Pochettino is also looking at a central midfielder to partner Enzo Fernandez, who was signed from Benfica in January for a fee that broke the British transfer record.

Up front, the team is desperate for a striker who can score 20+ goals in a season. A few days ago, Daily Mail reported that Pochettino is ready to offer a lifeline to Romelu Lukaku, who will come back to Stamford Bridge in the summer after his loan spell with Inter Milan ends.

Whether that remains the case or a new striker is signed, it remains to be seen. Doing the latter might be tough because of the high price of players in that position and knowing that Chelsea would be under Financial Fair Play restrictions along with having no European football next season.

If and when Pochettino becomes the Blues boss officially, he has a big job in his hands regarding squad management. Forget tactics and systems, the Argentine will have to manage the number of players he has and build some relationships among them.

But fans would be pleased that the former Tottenham Hotspur manager is getting the nod for the job at Stamford Bridge. He seems like one of the safer options with knowledge of how to build a team from the ground up. Of course, the official announcement is still pending so let us not count our chickens just yet.
