Chelsea want to keep Joao Felix beyond the summer but don’t want to pay the supposed €100million transfer fees that Atletico Madrid would demand for a permanent transfer.
According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, this has led Chelsea to contemplate a fresh loan move for the 23-year-old attacker. He was signed on a six-month loan deal in January.
And the Blues could look to keep him for another season for a package of around €20million that would include loan fees and wages and mirror the current contract that he is on at Stamford Bridge. A wise move?
Perhaps we can keep him on for another season and see how he develops before putting raw cash on the table for him that will see him arrive here permanently. Something of an audition, maybe.
Felix has shown glimpses of his brilliance here at Chelsea since joining us from Los Colchoneros. His silky dribbling skills, creative playmaking ability and knack for getting into dangerous scoring positions have impressed fans.
However, he has left a lot to be desired from his decision-making and finishing ability in the final third. Frank Lampard recently stated that the player himself doesn’t know where his strongest position is.
Joao Felix is a jack of all trades when it comes to playing across the frontline but doesn’t have the natural instinct and finishing ability one would associate with a world-class forward. Two goals in 16 games is a particularly poor output from a forward.
Re-signing him on loan won’t be a cheap option as well but it could be a smart move – one that can help us regain our position in the top four and challenge for domestic trophies. There are five games left in the season for Felix to completely convince the entire Chelsea fanbase that he deserves to be here next season as well.
