A View From The Bridge

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard not in the know regarding veteran star’s future

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has no idea about the future of N’Golo Kante

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard does not know much about the situation regarding the future of N’Golo Kante. The Frenchman has recently expressed his desire to extend his stay at the club.

In an interview with Sky Sports (h/t The Athletic, subscription required), Kante said that he wants to be a part of the future at Chelsea. With his current contract expiring this summer, the only way he stays here is by signing an extension.

Daily Mail has reported that the Frenchman is ready to turn down offers from Arsenal and Barcelona to do the above. He is keen on working with the incoming boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Here’s what Lampard said when asked about the future of the 32-year-old (h/t Football.London):

“I’ve got no understanding as to N’Golo speaking. I don’t know about the situation. He’s obviously a very, very high level player I’ve said that many times.

“Absolutely [still has a lot to offer]. Every game he has played for us in this short period is similar to N’Golo’s level and he has been a huge asset to the club we know that.”

Kante is still one of the important players in the Chelsea squad despite missing a major chunk of the season due to injury. He has only amassed a total of 685 minutes of playing time this season so far, and we are in the middle of May now.

The 2018 World Cup winner has done upon his return from injury in the last few games. The only limitation in his game is the lack of goals. For that reason, Lampard’s decision to play him as an attacking midfielder against Brentford was a baffling one.

Kante is the best defensive midfielder Chelsea have. If he signs an extension, the incoming manager must use him in his best position. The role of a manager is to play his best players in their favoured positions.

More Chelsea News:

Although he is 32 now, the former Leicester City star has a lot to offer. He can play two or three seasons at the highest level and push Chelsea forward in those years. It is time to make him sign a new contract.
