Chelsea and Bayern Munich held first talks for a deal regarding Sadio Mane
Pedro Almeida, a Portuguese Insider for transfer news, has reported that there have been first talks between Chelsea and Bayern Munich to potentially crack a deal for the transfer of Sadio Mane.
It is revealed that the talks were held last week and the Blues are currently favourites to sign the Senegalese superstar. Mane only joined Bayern last summer from Liverpool for a fee of around £35m with add-ons.
The former Southampton star has had an ordinary year in Munich, not helped by the fact that he picked up a long-term injury just before the World Cup. The recent incident with Leroy Sane has tarnished his relationship there.
If we look at the numbers, it isn’t that bad considering he has missed a few games and not started some. In 36 games and just over 2000 minutes of football, he has managed to score 12 goals and assist five (Transfermarkt).
So, as much as the relationship isn’t rosy in Germany, Mane knows how to be dangerous in the final third and score or assist goals for the team.
But, the bit that does not make sense is that Chelsea are interested in signing him. Has the club not learnt their lessons yet? If we keep the current season for proof, it says how badly this team needs a number nine.
Moreover, Christopher Nkunku, a player similar to Mane and younger, is anyway set to come to Stamford Bridge in the summer. The club wants to keep Joao Felix for another season as well.
What is the point of getting Mane then? He is an excellent forward but not a number nine. He played a few games for Liverpool last season in that position, but he was not playing like a traditional number nine would do.

If Chelsea want to spend money in the summer, better be not on a player who is on the wrong side of 30 and a profile which is not required right now. The 31-year-old had a good season at Liverpool before leaving for Bayern Munich but that doesn’t mean he can repeating that. It is better to invest this money elsewhere, on a younger forward.
