As per a tweet from Tottenham Tiers, via John Percy of the Telegraph (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are among the three London clubs linked with a move for Leicester City star and England international James Maddison this summer.
Maddison, whose contract at the King Power Stadium expires next summer (Transfermarkt), is set to make a move away from Leicester after the end of this season.
Along with Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in the former Norwich City star. There is a possibility that the Foxes go down to the Championship this season, which might make signing Maddison a bit easier.
Dean Smith’s team are currently 16th in the table with 30 points, only clear of 18th-placed Nottingham Forest on goal difference. Their final four games are against Fulham, Liverpool, Newcastle United and West Ham United. They must win two of them to guarantee safety.
Coming back to Maddison, despite his team’s underwhelming campaign, the 26-year-old has had a good time. He has scored nine goals and assisted eight in 26 league appearances so far. His influence in the final four could be key to deciding whether Leicester stay up or go down.
We all know about the Englishman’s qualities. He is technically strong on the ball and can play in different positions, be it as a number 10 or as an attacking number eight.
While the 26-year-old is an exceptional talent who will get better, Chelsea should focus on spending their time and money on a striker.
The Blues are eager to keep hold of Joao Felix for another season. The Portugal international is quite similar to Maddison in playing style and positions. Moreover, Christopher Nkunku is coming in the summer to bolster the attacking midfield department.
Hence, the club needs to find a striker that can score 20+ goals a season and help them have better results from next season onward.
