AS Roma star Tammy Abraham opened up on his exit from Chelsea and about life in Serie A in contrast to expectations coming up through Cobham.
The 25-year-old scored 30 goals in 82 appearances for Chelsea after being promoted to the senior team before leaving the club owing to insufficient playing time. However, the England international has recaptured his form since joining AS Roma after former Chelsea striker Jose Mourinho, netting 27 goals in 53 games for the Serie A team.
But the striker has failed to translate his previous season’s form onto the current campaign, as he has just one goal in 11 Serie A appearances. Despite the drop in form, the Englishman continues to be a key player for Jose Mourinho at the Stadio Olimpico.
However, the former Chelsea striker claims that since leaving the club, he has developed as a player and gained valuable knowledge of many cultures. While we could have done with a player of his talents this season, there is little argument in the way that Abraham needed to leave to further his career.
The striker said, (h/t Football.London) the following while speaking to the UEFA website:
“I’ve become more confident and have learned a lot about myself.”
“At Chelsea I was known as ‘the academy player’, and I think coming here I’ve realised it’s time to bring out my personality and show the world what I can do. It’s been an amazing experience learning about a different culture and seeing a different area of life.”
It’s unfortunate that Abraham didn’t succeed long-term at Chelsea. He was an incredible player under Lampard, but it appeared that under Thomas Tuchel he didn’t fit.
He is not the only player, though, who struggled to make an impact after being promoted to the senior team. In the past, numerous academy players, like Callum Hudson-Odoi, who is on loan at Bayern Leverkusen, and Brighton star Billy Gilmour, were forced to depart because of a lack of playing time. At their respective clubs, they are currently enjoying better playtime.
And Abraham has also undoubtedly benefited since joining AS Roma; otherwise, he would be warming the bench at Chelsea. The Blues have a clause to bring him back to Stamford Bridge but it remains to be seen if they will trigger it in the future.
