A View From The Bridge

“Playing with them is an honour”- Chelsea target says is ‘happy’ at Inter Milan

Goalkeeper Andre Onana happy at Inter Milan despite Chelsea interest

Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana is happy at athe Giuseppe Meazza Stadium amidst transfer interest from Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

Chelsea are in the market for a goalkeeper in the window, with Onana among the targets. Brentford’s David Raya is the other stopper on the list.

A few days ago, it was reported that Inter could demand as much as €70m if they are to sell Onana. They rejected a player swap offer from Chelsea, where the player in the deal was Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Here’s what Onana said when asked about his future (h/t Evening Standard, via Rai Sports):

“We are a great team, with strong players. For me, playing with them is an honour. I am very happy. The group is the most important thing of all.”

Kepa and Edouard Mendy have got enough opportunities to show that they can be the team’s number one going forward. But, neither of them have done much.

It won’t be surprising to see the latter leaving the club in the summer as well. He rejected a new contract offer late last year by classing it as disrespectful.

Chelsea have confirmed the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as the new manager. He generally likes a goalkeeper who is comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Onana is one of the best when it comes to shot-stopping and being good on the ball. The Cameroon international will soon play in the Champions League Final against Manchester City. So, he might be a European champion by the time Chelsea potentially offer a deal to sign him.

To be a good side and challenge for the big trophies every season, a team needs to have a top and consistent goalkeeper. That is the base from where an elite team is built.

So, Chelsea cannot take this situation lightly and look to sign a top keeper soon. Onana has the talent to be that man for them. If not, then go big for Raya because he is all set to leave Brentford this summer.
