Former Chelsea star Thibaut Courtois is hoping that the club’s recent slump continues when we play Real Madrid in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash at Stamford Bridge later today.
Chelsea will face the Spanish team in an effort to recover from a 2-0 deficit after falling behind in the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu. The hiring of temporary manager Frank Lampard has not been successful as they have now lost all three games in his second spell.
Chelsea have their task cut out against the defending champions and former Blues ace Courtois is lost for words regarding the club’s struggles. However, his sympathy only extends so much given that he now lines up for the opposition.
The Belgian goalkeeper, who made two outstanding saves against Chelsea in the first leg, is expecting a cautious performance from his team. Surely the onus is now on us to attack Real and make a match out of it.
When asked about his hopes for the next game against Chelsea on Tuesday night at a press conference, (h/t Mirror) the 30-year-old said:
“Honestly, I don’t understand how Chelsea are failing in the Premier League. They have players at the world level who are able to achieve success, although I hope the bad run continues on Tuesday. We are obliged to play very much with our heads and to forget the advantage we have from the Bernabeu.”
It’s understandable for a player to say so since he wants the best for his team, and in recent years, the Belgian has been their finest goalkeeper. The outcome of our season will depend on Chelsea’s performance in this second leg, though.
Even if we are only behind by two goals, the game will restart from the beginning, and we will have a full 90 minutes to decide the outcome.
Just let’s hope that the players remain optimistic play this game with confidence and give utmost dedication to turn the tie around.
