Burnley manager and Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany have been surprisingly linked with the managerial role at Chelsea in recent months.
However, the Belgian tactician has batted away any questions about potentially becoming Chelsea’s new head coach. He said at a recent press conference, via Metro:
“I have too much at this moment in time in my head in terms of wanting to win football matches. That’s the only thing I care about.”
That’s a textbook diplomatic response from Kompany there. It can’t be denied that the managerial role at Chelsea would be a massive, massive opportunity for a newbie like him.
Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte, Carlo Ancelotti and Thomas Tuchel are just some of the very high-profile names that have managed us. To be a Chelsea boss is to be one of the most talked-about people in European football.
When he started off as RSC Anderlecht’s head coach in August 2020, he probably wouldn’t have envisaged that he would be linked to the Chelsea job so soon. Age isn’t entirely a barrier.
Julian Nagelsmann and Ruben Amorim have shown that age doesn’t matter if you have the requisite skills to be a top manager. But Kompany is very inexperienced.
One can’t deny that his achievement of securing promotion to the Premier League with Burnley for next season with seven games in hand was brilliant. It put him on the map as a manager.
But managing Chelsea is a whole different gravy. Let us let him prove his stripes in the top division before making a call. For now, Mauricio Pochettino seems like the safer option.
