Roy Keane offered his unvarnished view on Frank Lampard’s appointment as Chelsea’s temporary manager for the end of the current campaign.
It was Frank’s third loss in his first three games as the Blues’ interim manager as his team lost 2-1 against Brighton Hove & Albion.
Chelsea are currently in an untenable scenario as a result, and the fans expressed their annoyance by booing Todd Boehly, who was seated beneath them when the referee blew the final whistle.
The same Boehly who lavished cash on bringing in young players during the winter transfer window has seen his team struggle to win games, and their campaign is practically over.
(h/t Mirror), Keane discussed Chelsea’s issue and his thoughts on Lampard’s hiring in a session of the London fan debate show The Overlap.
“Frank is a lucky boy. Frank has had some really good jobs; you need some luck in the game, but to go back in there? Good luck to him. The way things have changed in football, the manager is under a lot of pressure now.
“They’ve got some excellent players, but obviously something is missing at the moment. Even in the last couple of performances, they’re not finding a way to win.”
At Chelsea, Everton, and again as the temporary manager of Chelsea, Lampard has undoubtedly secured successful managing positions. His tenure with each club, however, has been brief; he was fired from Everton, then at Blues, and is now a caretaker boss at Chelsea.
Keane’s second argument is also quite valid, and the Blues’ firing of two head coaches this season is one illustration of how managers are under pressure to provide results immediately.
What Chelsea are now lacking is a risk-taking manager who can have an impact on the locker room and whose system can help the players find their rhythm during games. Lampard seems out of his depth at this point and it honestly leads one to wonder what the point behind his appointment was.
It would have been better had we continued with Graham Potter until the summer and then opted to find a new manager. The amount of changes we are making in the managerial department is needless and confusing.
