“This is the worst run in the history of football”- Arsenal legend doesn’t mince his words about Chelsea’s recent form

Paul Merson says Chelsea are on ‘the worst run in the history of football’

Arsenal legend Paul Merson, who won two first-division titles during his time as a player for the Gunners, has claimed that Chelsea are on the worst run in the history of football.

Statistically speaking, it is safe to say that the Blues would not be on the worst run in the history of the sport. Surely a team would have done worse.

For reference, Chelsea are on a five-game losing run where they have scored just once. This includes shock losses in the Premier League against Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Overall, we haven’t won in eight consecutive games across competitions. There was a three-game winning streak before that under Graham Potter, but it was preceded by a six-game winless run.

He’s kind of right

We are 12th in the Premier League and are mathematically out of UEFA Champions League spots. We will be lucky to even be in Europe next season – there is a very, very huge chance that we won’t.

Even a top-half finish will suffice at this point for us. For Merson, this is the worst run in the sport’s history simply due to the talent at Chelsea’s disposal.

He told Sky Sports, via Evening Standard:

“I’m not exaggerating here, this is the worst run in the history of football. I know people go ‘some teams have gone 25 games without a win in the lower league’ but not with talent like that. When you’ve got talent like this who are top international footballers and they’re on a run like this I would have to say it’s the worst run in the history of football for the talent they have.”

We have spent a king’s ransom in both transfer windows under Todd Boehly. From Kalidou Koulibaly and Raheem Sterling to Mykhaylo Mudryk and Noni Madueke, we have signed world-famous players across age groups.

More Chelsea News:

Yet, it seems that the team has lacked chemistry, be it under Potter or Frank Lampard. It remains to be seen who our next manager will be, but whoever it is, will have one massive job at his hands. Merson’s claims ring true to some extent. We can hardly disagree with it.
