Former Bayern Munich manager, Julian Nagelsmann is no more in the running to be named Chelsea boss ahead of the 2023/24 season. Focus will now shift to others namely Burnley’s Vincent Kompany and Mauricio Pochettino.
After favourable results in meetings with the board and the German manager, Nagelsmann was seen as the front-runner to lead the Blues as head coach. He seems to have concerns about relocating to West London, while Chelsea had concerns about his age and preparedness to leave Germany and join the Premier League.
But it now seems the 35-year-old provided the Blues with conflicting input before they excluded him from their shortlist for a manager. Either way, our chances of hiring him now are more or less over.
The Blues are taking their time to search for the ideal manager because they don’t want to make the same mistake they did when they hired Graham Potter. Pochettino is now in the lead since Chelsea’s management was pleased with the initial round of discussions with the former PSG manager.
They also admire Kompany, who succeeded in helping Burnley gain promotion to the Premier League for the next season. Nagelsmann, for his part, provided minimal information when asked about his choice, (h/t Mirror), telling Sky Sport Germany:
“To cancel something, you have to commit to something.”
The 35-year-old Nagelsmann is undoubtedly an excellent manager and can be a mainstay at the top of the pyramid for years to come. But he also has his drawbacks, including the fact that he hasn’t had much of an impact on the locker room and that many Bayern Munich players are dissatisfied with him. Therefore, this may be the rationale Chelsea have for not hiring him.
While both Pochettino and Kompany are good managers, it would be premature to hire Kompany considering that he has not overseen a team of significant players or a club, which is quite different from overseeing a Championship team.
And for Pochettino, is similar to Graham Potter in that it will take time for him to build up his base of support, and Chelsea supporters are undoubtedly impatient. As the season draws to a close, the board will thus need to act quickly.
