Talksport pundit Jason Cundy claims that Chelsea would have been in a relegation fight had Thomas Tuchel not gotten the points early in the season.
Chelsea had 10 points from six league games when Tuchel was sacked back in September. Graham Potter took the reins and struggled big time before getting the hook earlier this month.
Lampard is yet to win in the three league games played. The Blues are on 39 points from 32 games, only nine ahead of 17th-placed Nottingham Forest.
Here’s what Cundy said when asked to sum up the performance of the team following another defeat, this time to Brentford at Stamford Bridge (h/t Talksport, h/t Metro):
“I’m actually numb to it now. I’m numb to what’s going on at Stamford Bridge. There’s so much wrong at Chelsea Football Club from top to bottom.
“I don’t think we’ll pick up another point this season. The best thing that’ll happen at the end of the season is that it ends and we reset and start again, as long as we don’t get relegated. We’ve got 39 points, but I don’t think we’ll get another point. Honestly, I don’t.
“Let’s say there were 12 games left, we would be in a relegation fight. I’m not saying that lightly. Thomas Tuchel is the only reason we are OK. If he didn’t get ten points, we would be right in it.”
What is happening at Chelsea is just a sequence of events that was forthcoming after some crazy decision-making from the new owners since they took over the club last summer.
Although Tuchel did not make a good start to the season, sacking him in September, a week after the deadline day of the summer window, was a questionable decision. Potter came in and got cramped with the bloated squad, especially after the January window when they signed eight players.
To see Frank Lampard not succeeding in this interim role is not a surprise, to be honest. If we add his three league defeats of now, he has won one in his last 19 league games as a manager (most of it while leading Everton).
Mauricio Pochettino is closing in on becoming the permanent manager. As good a manager as he is, the job at hand here is astronomically tough.
The first thing the Argentine may have to do is trim the count of the squad. Once that happens, he can add the players of his choice to start the recovery.
