According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, (h/t Express) Inter Milan wants Chelsea duo Trevoh Chalobah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek in exchange for Andre Onana.
Chelsea are interested in signing Onana, and the two clubs’ executives met on Wednesday in Milan. A shot-stopper is on the agenda ahead of what will be a pivotal summer of rebuilding.
Chelsea have prioritised acquiring a goalkeeper since Kepa Arrizabalaga has never truly been the solution at Stamford Bridge and Edouard Mendy isn’t a first-choice goalie anymore. In addition, the team will name a new manager for the upcoming campaign with Mauricio Pochettino a strong favourite.
Onana is reportedly Chelsea’s top target for the upcoming campaign, despite continued interest in Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili and Brentford’s David Raya. Despite discussions, a compromise between the two clubs have not been reached. And the Serie A team placed a £35.3 million (€40 million) value for the Cameroonian.
Chelsea are also looking to have one of its players included in a trade, and they previously offered to send Kepa to Inter but the latter turned it down since they could sign Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli to take Onana’s place.
It may seem unfair to sell two players for a custodian as we cannot trade Chalobah and Loftus-Cheek for Onana. However, we can either sell one and that could be Loftus-Cheek, given he has not been a consistent starter. As we are unsure of our future manager’s plans for him, selling him will make more sense.
And by joining Inter, he will have more game-time and could also gain momentum, as he is certainly an excellent player. Despite not playing in many of the games, Chalobah is still an important player, and we need to maintain our defence depth.
Chelsea shall require backup in defence given Kalidou Koulibaly’s future with the team and Thiago Silva’s one-year contract expiration. Therefore, before selling two of our players to sign Onana, we should consider our options.
