Glen Johnson claims Chelsea target Victor Osimhen hasn’t done enough for Didier Drogba comparisons
Speaking to Lord Ping (h/t Football.London), Glen Johnson believes that Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has done enough yet to warrant comparisons with Didier Drogba.
Osimhen, who has been linked with Chelsea of late, is having a season to remember so far. His goals are one of the main reasons why Napoli are running away with the Serie A and are hot favourites to reach the Champions League final.
If we put the Nigerian’s season into numbers, he has scored 25 goals and assisted five in 29 games in all competitions. That averages up to a direct goal contribution of more than one per game. The player has himself made it clear that he looks up to Drogba and wants to emulate his career.
Irrespective of how good Osimhen has been, longevity will be looked at in the coming years. Johnson feels he hasn’t done enough to get compared with the legends like Drogba. Here’s what he said (h/t Football.London):
“Victor Osimhen is currently scoring at an alarming rate – he is currently shy of a goal per game, which is something you cannot ignore.
“It’s hard to compare him to Drogba, Drogba was a beast for Chelsea! He was fast, strong and had good technical ability in the Premier League. Osimhen is an exciting talent who knows where the goal is. If he can adapt, he will thrive in the Premier League.”
Drogba was a phenomenal striker who did it for many years and won a lot of things during his career. If Osimhen can come close to that and continue with his scoring touch, the competition will intensify.
The 24-year-old’s attributes are quite similar to Drogba in terms of being physically dominant, willing to run the channels, finishing off chances with aplomb and linking the play up beautifully.
He could be someone who comes into the Premier League and takes it by storm. We hope that Chelsea do enough to sign him in the near future.
If we get Osimhen, the team gets a whole different dimension. His presence in the attack would free up space for the creative players in the side to work their magic.

For some time, Chelsea haven’t had a striker that can score 20+ goals per season consistently. Osimhen almost guarantees that as well. Let’s see what happens in the summer. The player has not closed the door on a potential exit from Napoli.
